The name LAST EXIT TO CANDYLAND is a combination of titles. LAST EXIT TO BROOKLYN, is an indiscretionary novel; noted for its runaway prose and brutal frankness. CANDYLAND is a childs board game. This film is similarly contradictory. Presenting the fairy tale of Hansel and Gretel as survivors story of abduction, cannibalism and the legal system.
The setting has changed from its original medieval context to a futuristic cyber-nior. Converting witchcraft to technology is a means of sparking a sense of wonder and discovery to the otherwise very familiar story. The art direction is inspired by German Expressionist films, Der Golem (1920), Faust (1926), and Busby Berkeley’s kaleidoscopic musical productions of the 1930’s.
